The municipality of Bloemendaal, The Netherlands, will immediately ban advertisements for meat, dairy products or products using fossil fuels as an energy source. They announced on 27 October 2023 that the municipality has agreed to this in their new contract with Centercom Buitenreclame. The ban applies to A0-sized triangular billboards.
"The Bloemendaal municipality's Municipal Executive decided to ban advertising for products with fossil fuel as energy source because of the impact these products have on the climate. The production of meat causes climate damage worldwide." The college wants to send "a signal" with the ban. In this, Bloemendaal municipality follows neighbouring municipality of Haarlem and province of North Holland, which took a similar decision earlier.
Ziggy Klazes, the initiator in Haarlem, reacted happily in a comment to the local newspaper NH Nieuws: "There is more and more attention to it. Not only in the Netherlands, but throughout Europe." In Haarlem, there will also be no more polluting advertisements on the triangular A0-billboards from 1 January 2024.
