Description
ClientEarth lodged a legal complaint with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) against BP’s multi-million pound ‘Possibilities Everywhere: Keep Advancing’ ad campaign in December 2019. ClientEarth believed this ad to be misleading, as it portrayed BP as a renewables company, while 96% of its spend was on oil and gas.
BP withdrawal
In February 2020, BP announced it would be pulling the campaign and ‘stop corporate advertising’ as part of their announcement on their ‘net zero by 2050’ plans. BPs CEO also committed BP to redirecting its advertising resources towards advocating for progressive climate policies.
Precedent set
In June 2020, the OECD announced ClientEarth's complaint would have proceeded if BP hadn’t already committed to end the campaign, setting a precedent for complaints against corporate greenwashing.
