Description

Who: Byron Shire Council, Australia

What: Passed a motion to ban fossil fuel advertising and sponsorship.

When: December 2022

Byron Shire Council became the 10th council to vote for a fossil ad ban in Australia. The NSW north coast town has also taken an extra step, agreeing to write to local events and organisations, asking them to take a similar action against big polluters. Byron Bay is a major hub for festivals and events.

The Notice of Motion that was approved, requested the General Manager add ‘fossil fuels’ to the products that are banned from entering into sponsorship agreements with the council.

New sponsorship policy

‘The following companies, partnerships, sole traders or individuals are not suitable sponsors in Byron Shire, those: involved in the manufacture, distribution and wholesaling of tobacco related products, involved in the extraction and sale of coal, petroleum and gas, pornography and/or addictive drugs.’
