Coventry City Council is one of the local councils leading the way in the UK, with an Advertising and Sponsorship Policy that bans adverts for the "Petrochemical Industry". The policy also takes the still-uncommon step to restrict adverts promoting gambling and pay-day loans on the advertising sites managed by the council.
"The industry categories that are not acceptable for entering into a sponsorship or advertising agreement include:
- Tobacco/cigarettes
- Gambling
- Adult-oriented products/services
- Armaments
- Petrochemical Industry
- Payday Loans"
Coventry, the UK's 2021 City of Culture, is among the first council in the UK to include a ban on adverts for climate-wrecking fossil fuels in council policy.
