Description

"The advertising industry is hampering the climate fight", says current activist and philosopher and climate activist Esther Michelsen Kjeldahl. She is co-author with Ariel Storm Lokzinsky of the recently published book “TThe Power of Advertising” (DK: Reklamemagt), which criticizes the advertising industry for hindering the green transition.

In 2018, Esther Michelsen Kjeldahl was one of the founders of Den Grønne Studenterbevægelse (EN: the Green Student Movement), where she has, among other things, worked for a ban on advertising for climate-damaging products such as air travel, meat and cars.

When she was writing her master's thesis in philosophy in 2022, she chose to delve into the impact of advertising on the climate crisis. This gave birth to a fiery critique of the advertising industry, which has been published as a book.

"Initially, I hope it creates a big debate. And then, of course, we hope that it leads to political regulation. In the very short term, there will be a municipal election here in November. And we can see that there's a big wave in Europe, where cities in the Netherlands, for example, are starting to ban fossil fuel adverts. We hope this can become a theme for the municipal elections."

"Besides that, I hope to create a little more self-awareness in the industry. But hopefully also get all the people in the industry who are concerned about the climate crisis and already feel a bit bad about advertising for some of the most climate-damaging companies to get together and organize themselves. I think it's going to have to come from both places for change to happen."
