Doctors for the Environment Australia wrote a position paper (June 2023) on fossil fuel advertising: "Fossil fuel advertising and sponsorship should be banned in recognition of their harmful effects on health and the environment."
Quoted from the position paper:
"As a society, we have chosen to restrict tobacco advertising for public health reasons. Banning cigarette advertising both reduced the use of tobacco and ‘denormalised’ tobacco use. Advertising bans led to increased awareness of the pervasive and subliminal advertising techniques commonly employed by that industry. We must now respond in the same way to fossil fuel advertising.
Doctors must exercise their duty of care and speak out against fossil fuel advertising, just as we did with tobacco. Banning fossil fuel advertising would help reduce the social licence of the industry and reduce their influence."
