Description

Who: Gothenburg, Sweden

What: A motion to ban ads by the fossil and aviation industry. The motion did not pass. As of late 2022, Gothenburg announced new guidelines for fossil ads via their 2023 budget proposal.

When: January 2021 - ongoing

The city of Gothenburg announced (English, Swedish) announced it is going to 'draw up guidelines to ban advertising for coal, oil and gas extraction on Gothenburg city billboards'. This was done via the budget proposal for 2023, tabled on the 24th of November 2022.

Earlier, a motion to ban fossil ads was put forward by The Green Party, The Left party and the Feminist Party in 2021. Unfortunately, the majority voted against the motion in the municipality. But it didn’t end there. The Green Party in Gothenburg highlighted a fossil ad ban as one of 110 proposals in the election in September 2022 (see proposal 104). Since the election there is a change of majority in the city (Social Democrats, Left Party and Green Party) which now opened up a new discussion.
