Description

11 Belgian organisations join 15,656 Belgians in demanding a ban on fossil advertising. The federal parliament's Energy, Climate and Environment Committee will decide on possible hearings on a bill to ban fossil fuel advertising.

After these Belgian organisations helped collect signatures for the European Citizen's Initiative to ban fossil ads, they are now turning to their own government.

Joeri Thijs from Greenpeace Belgium: “It is unthinkable today to see a pack of cigarettes appear on a gigantic billboard in a football stadium for even one second, or to hear a commercial on the radio about how relaxing smoking can be. In the not-so-distant past, however, it was perfectly legal to advertise cigarettes. The tobacco industry knew best how to silence scientists and scientists who sounded the alarm. Fortunately, after countless lawsuits and scandals, the governments intervened. We are now asking them to do the same for fossil advertising.”

The organisations handing in this petition are Greenpeace, Oxfam, Amnesty International Belgique francophone, Youth For Climate, Grands Parents pour le Climate, Groot Ouders voor Klimaat, Canopéa, De Transformisten, Dokters van de Wereld België, CNCD-11.11.11, Gang Vieux en colère.
