Description
During the 2022 energy crisis, the French government announced measures including shutting down advertising screens at night. In response, a petition was started to shut down advertising screens for good by six French organsations (Plein La Vue, RAP, Greenpeace France, XR France, Alternatiba and ANV-Cop21). They see social as well as environmental reasons to ban advertising screens and refer to a report by the electricity grid operator which calls for a phase out of ad screens to save energy and limit consumerism. The 2020 citizen’s assembly also already called for this measure, however it was not adopted by the French government.
Sustainable development commission of National Assembly debate, 28 March 2023
By the time the proposal to ban digital advertising screens was discussed in the sustainable development commission of the National Assembly, more than 67,000 citizens signed the petition. 85% of French citizens are in favor of reducing illuminated advertising in public spaces, while a majority of 54% are in favor of banning them altogether. This was however not enough to sway the RN, LR and Renaissance deputies to the side of the general interest. The commission rejected the single article of the bill n°888 tabled by Delphine Batho.
