Description

Complaints have been submitted to advertising regulators in the UK and the Netherlands objecting to Shell’s advertisement of ‘carbon neutral home energy’ using fossil gas. The complaints by climate groups Advertising Fossil Free and the New Weather Institute concern expressions of an international marketing campaign by Shell, in which the 'Shell Energy' division offers customers to buy 'CO2-compensated gas' at home from the oil multinational. The climate groups are represented by De Roos Lawyers. It filed the complaints with the Dutch Advertising Standards Committee (RCC) on 6 February 2023 and with the UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) on 4 April 2023. After the complaint was filed in the Netherlands, Shell replaced 'CO2-compensated gas' with the term 'gas with CO2 compensation.' In the UK, Shell speaks of 'carbon neutral gas'.
