Description

Extinction Rebellion NL (XR NL) demands an immediate end to all fossil advertising. Their campaign, targetting on fossil ads in public space, as well as enablers of fossil ads and the goverment, is launched in June 2024. They aim to ban ads by airlines, cruises, car companies with more than 30% turnover from fossil powered cars, coal, oil and gas companies, fast fashion chains and fast food chains.

Actions: 500 ad spaces hacked & KLM Open golf tournament blocked

On 28th of June 2024, XR NL took over 500 ad spaces all over the Netherlands. Their posters read: 'There used to be a fossil ad here'. Several media outlets wrote about the action and in the municipal council of Amsterdam, questions were asked. The 3 big outdoor ad companies JC Decaux, Global and Clear Channel reacted with an angry letter.

The KLM Open golf tournament was blocked by XR activists on 23rd of June 2024. XR spokesman Emile Sprenger: "The tournament likes to present itself as the 'most sustainable sports event in the Netherlands,' but in no way lives up to this pretentious title with fossil sponsor money. Every day the fossil industry takes us further into the disastrous climate and ecological crisis. It is ironic that fossil big polluters like KLM and Tata Steel are sponsoring a 'green' golf tournament."

Government is not taking action

Because the government doesn't stop fossil ads, XR NL takes measures in their own hands. They state:

'Yearly, more people die from fossil products then from tobacco. Tobacco ads are forbidden. Why do we still allow ads for fossil products?

  • Fossil ads pollute and make us sick
  • Fossil ads contain misleading information and influence consumers
  • Fossil ads ensure that fossil companies and fossil products are seen as normal
  • Fossil ads increase the demand of fossil products
  • Fossil ads exacerbate the climate and ecological crisis
  • Fossil ads strengthen unjust systems
  • Fossil ads obstruct a just energy transition

The scientific advice to the Dutch Climate minister is clear: "A ban on fossil ads is an essential measure to ensure and fasten a sustainable transition".'
