In 2021, Greenpeace NL organized The Dirty Ad Election, highlighting the most brazen fossil ad of the year. The public was asked to nominate and vote for the most absurd, old-fashioned and ridiculous fossil ad of 2021. This campaign showed that ads for fossil damage are out of date and to promote an actual fossil ad ban. A collaboration between Shell and Staatsbosbeheer (Dutch National Forestry Service) won the election for an ad about ‘planting trees together’. Shell and Staatsbosbeheer were congratulated on this major greenwashing failure by sharing digital postcards on social media.
