Description
A petition hosted on the official UK government petition platform, urging the UK government to bad fossil advertising, has been signed more than 30,000 times as of January 30th 2025.
The petition cites the successful ban on tobacco advertising as precedent for a ban on fossil fuel advertising, arguing that given the urgency of the climate crisis, fossil companies should no longer be allowed to use advertising to "enhance their social capital and normalise their activities".
If the petition reaches 100,000 signatures before 12 May 2025, it has to be considered for debate in Parliament.
Petitions hosted on the platform which receive over 100,000 signatures can trigger a debate in parliament. If they receive 10,000 signatures, they receive a formal response from the UK government. The response given on 18 December 2024 by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, however, was rather lacklustre: "The government is committed to reducing emissions from high carbon products and will continue to bring forward proposals to do so. There are currently no plans to restrict fossil fuel advertising."
