Description

Berlin Werbefrei is a local group that counters advertising in Berlin. Via a referendum, they want the people of Berlin to vote on their proposal.

The problem of advertising

The massive proliferation of advertising negatively affects the urban landscape and compromises its social and aesthetic function as a place of societal life.

The ongoing digitalisation of advertising will further intensify the problem. Animated and moving content attracts attention and creates unrest in urban space. In addition, illuminated and digital advertising are responsible for most of the light pollution and the associated negative impacts on humans and nature. Digital advertising installations such as video monitors and media boards have a huge resource and energy consumption.

Bearable use of advertising in public space and schools

The referendum-initiative Berlin Werbefrei stands up to this trend by proposing a bill for bearable use of advertising within the public space:

  •       Reduction of the number of advertising installations in public space.
  •       Implementation of design specifications for advertising installations to avoid visual dominance.
  •       Prohibition of digital advertising installations and alternating light installations.

In addition, the bill provides for a ban on advertising in schools and universities. Sponsorship is permitted if influencing is ruled out and the principle of transparency is upheld.
